Royal Oaks Students Rally Against Drugs

The children at Royal Oaks Elementary School in Duarte wriggled and squirmed during the half-hour assembly this week, but, on cue, they showed they knew what the assembly was about.
“What do you tell people when they ask you to do drugs?” Police Capt. Frank Fernandez of the Substance Abuse and Narcotics Education Unite program (SANE) asked the students.
“No!” the children shouted in unison.
As part of Red Ribbon Week, sponsored by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Fernandez and Duarte Deputy Linda Muse took their message to five elementary schools Monday and led the students in pep rallies.
Children proudly wore the red ribbons that symbolize being drug-free. “McGruff,” the crime-fighting dog, and The Ambassadors, performers from Duarte High School, also took part in the pep rallies.
Other Red Ribbon Week activities included drug-education talks, entertainment and poster and essay contests.
