SCORTSCOPE : Bruin Women Spikers Put Win Streak on Line

The UCLA women’s volleyball team, ranked second nationally and winner of 29 straight Pacific 10 Conference matches over the past two seasons, will play host to Washington State (7-20 overall, 1-10 in the Pac-10) at 7 p.m. Friday and to No. 19 Washington (12-7 overall, 7-4 in the Pac-10) at 7 p.m. Saturday at John Wooden Center.

Last week the Bruins (17-1, 11-0) defeated No. 6 USC in three games and won road matches with Arizona State in five games and No. 9 Arizona in three.

In the three matches, sophomore outside hitter Elaine Youngs had 59 kills, 44 digs, five blocks and three service aces. Her 33 digs against Arizona State broke the school record of 30 set by Patty Orozco against Pacific in 1983. She also had a career-high 29 kills against the Wildcats.

Freshman middle blocker Marissa Hatchett broke a school record and tied a Pac-10 record with 11 unassisted blocks against Arizona State. The school record of seven was held by Kathy Herse and Liz Masakayan.

Winner of 12 of its last 14 matches, the Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (14-6 overall, 9-0 in the West Coast Conference as the week began) is idle till late next week.

Last week the Waves lost to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a five-game match that lasted two hours and 37 minutes and defeated the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara, each in three games.

Against Cal Poly, senior outside hitter Tami Seidenberg led the Waves with 28 kills and 24 digs and had a team-high 13 kills against Santa Clara.

UCLA’s men’s volleyball team, defending NCAA champion, will play an exhibition against Hang-yang University of Korea following Saturday’s 7 p.m. women’s match between UCLA and Washington at Wooden Center.

UCLA has 10 lettermen and two starters from last year’s 29-5 team, including Volleyball Monthly Player of the Year Trevor Schirman. Hangyang includes two players from Korea’s national team and several from its junior national team.

Santa Monica College’s women’s volleyball team (5-8 overall, 5-6 in the Western State Conference at the start of the week) will play host to West Los Angeles College at 7 p.m. Friday and to Ventura at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Corsair Gymnasium.

Last week the Corsairs defeated Glendale in five games and lost to Cuesta in three. Against Cuesta, Tanja Elliott led the Corsairs with a .388 hitting percentage and teammate Stephanie Tarvyd hit .368.

The West Los Angeles College women’s volleyball team (8-11 overall, 3-8 in the Western State Conference as the week began) will play at 7 p.m. Friday at Santa Monica College and play host to Moorpark at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Westchester High.

Last week the Oilers lost to Santa Barbara City and Pierce, each in four games, and had a mixed record in the Saddleback tournament. At Saddleback, WLAC took two games from Mt. San Antonio, lost two to Saddleback and split two each with Antelope Valley and Taft.

Against Pierce, Lorrie Vellutato had 10 kills and Margaret Williamson had three stuff blocks.

The No. 3 Pepperdine men’s water polo team (17-4 overall, 6-0 in the Big West Conference) will play host for a four-team round-robin tournament starting at 11:15 a.m. Friday at Raleigh Runnels Pool. Other teams are No. 11 Air Force, No. 20 Iona and Loyola Marymount.

Last week the Waves defeated UC Santa Barbara, 15-9; upset top-ranked UC Irvine, 8-6, and were upset by UCLA, 9-4.

Pepperdine scoring leaders are sophomore Geoffrey Clark with 60 goals and senior Sasa Poljak with 56.

UCLA’s water polo team (9-7 overall, 0-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference) is idle until next weekend’s Pac-10-Big West tournament in Long Beach.

Last week the Bruins defeated Pepperdine, 9-5, and lost to No. 4 Stanford, 7-5.

Senior Alexis Rousseau leads UCLA with 40 goals and 22 steals, and senior Mark Maretzki tops the Bruins with 11 assists and has 25 goals.

The Santa Monica College water polo team (6-7 overall, 2-3 in the Western State Conference at the start of the week) will play at Pierce at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Last week the Corsairs lost to Cuesta, 20-7, and to Los Angeles Valley, 14-11. Chuck Moore scored four goals against Cuesta.

The No. 3 UCLA men’s soccer team (14-1-1) will play its final home match of the regular season against No. 9 Fresno State (13-1-3 overall, 7-0 in the Big West Conference) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North Soccer Field.

Last week the Bruins won the UCLA/Met Life tournament and San Diego State finished second. UCLA shut out Wisconsin-Green Bay, 3-0, and No. 11 Rutgers, 1-0. Against Green Bay, sophomore midfielder Sam George had two goals and an assist, and senior defender Will Steadman scored the only goal against Rutgers on a penalty kick.

Senior goalkeeper Anton Nistl’s two shutouts gave him 13 for the season, tying the UCLA season record of Mike Vanneman. Nistl’s 13 shutouts and his goals against an average of 0.31 are the best in the nation.

The Santa Monica College men’s soccer team will play at Oxnard at 3 p.m. Tuesday. SMC was 3-3 overall and 3-0 in the Western State Conference as the week began.

In road games last week, the Corsairs shut out Bakersfield, 2-0, and edged Allan Hancock, 3-2. SMC forward Scott Fite scored two goals against Hancock and one against Bakersfield. Byron Nickleberry scored the winning goal against Hancock.

The Santa Monica College football team (3-3 overall, 2-3 in the Western State Conference) will play at Pierce (2-4, 1-4) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Last week the Corsairs lost to Bakersfield, 20-13. SMC quarterback Jeff Barrett, a left-handed thrower, completed 11 of 19 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game with an injury to his right shoulder. Corsair running back Charles McKinzie gained 106 yards on 24 carries.

SMC defensive back Mario Hull, who scored on a 14-yard interception return, was named the team’s defensive player of the game. He had three unassisted tackles and nine assists and returned a field goal attempt that fell short to the Corsair 38-yard line.

UCLA’s men’s and women’s cross-country teams will compete Sunday in the Pac-10 championships at Stanford.

Last year UCLA senior Mark Dani finished second in the conference championships.

UCLA’s women’s swim team, which tied for sixth place at last season’s NCAA championships, will open its season Friday at UC Santa Barbara and then play host to the Mission Viejo club at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center.

Bruin All-Americans who return are Kristin Stoudt, who placed in five events at the NCAAs; Sheri Smith, who placed in four, and Britt Williams, who placed in two.

Pepperdine women, who finished second to Northern Arizona in the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference last year, will begin their season at noon Saturday at UC Irvine.

Sophomore Abigail Mielder, the PCSC Swimmer of the Year last season, is one of 14 letter winners at Pepperdine. At the conference meet, Mielder won four races and swam on three winning relay teams.

UCLA women, sixth with a 953 at last week’s Tulsa Invitational golf tournament, will compete Friday through Sunday at the Stanford Invitational.

Tulsa won the team competition with a 930. UCLA senior Jean Zedlitz tied for 12th with a 235 for 54 holes.

Several Pepperdine and UCLA women tennis players will compete today through Saturday in the All-American Championships at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

The Bruins are led by Jessica Emmons, ranked second nationally in singles in the preseason. Other UCLA players include Stella Sampras, Mamie Ceniza, Kirsten Dreyer, Iwalani McCalla, Cammie Foley, Allegra Milholland and Kim Po.

Pepperdine competitors are 13th-ranked Noelle Porter and No. 17 Janna Kovacevich.

Pepperdine junior outfielder Jalal Leach has been named to a team of U. S. college players that will compete in the Presidential Cup tournament Tuesday through Nov. 12 in Taipei, Taiwan.

Other teams are from Canada, Holland, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Spain and Taiwan.

Golf Tournament--The seventh annual Tenth Player golf tournament, a benefit for the UCLA baseball team, will be played Monday at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena. Wayne Harding of Santa Monica, a former Bruin baseball player and a supporter of UCLA athletics, will be honored at the event, formerly known as the Horse-hider’s tournament. Baseball Clinic--Tom House, Texas Rangers pitching coach, will discuss weight training and other conditioning for pitchers at a free baseball clinic for school, college and youth league coaches and players at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Santa Monica College Technology Building, Room 257.

Basketball Leagues--Registration is under way for basketball leagues for ages 6 through 14 that begin in January at Beverly Hills Family YMCA, 9930 Santa Monica Blvd. The fee to Y members is $55.
