REPAIRING STREETS AND ROADS
Beginning in fiscal year 1986/87, the amount of money spent on road repair, maintenance and construction in the county increased dramatically. That year and the next, fiscal 1987/88, the most recent year for which information is available, nearly a quarter-billion dollars went toward street maintenance, road reconstruction, rehabilitation and repair and a host of other similar projects.
Irvine was clearly out front in 1987/88, spending almost twice as much, $42.8 million, as the second-highest spender, Anaheim ($22.1 million). Irvine’s per capita spending was also far higher than any other city.
