From Times Wire Services

The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant was shut down today because a mechanism that regulates voltage emissions began to spark and threatened to cause a fire.

The incident, which occurred at 7:03 a.m., was said to pose no threat of radioactive leakage, but California Department of Forestry firefighters were called to the scene in case of a fire.

The incident was classified an “unusual event,” which is the lowest-level plant emergency. Event determinations are made when outside help is called in. Plant officials must notify the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and San Luis Obispo County.

Pacific Gas & Electric, which operates Diablo Canyon, will keep the plant closed for an undetermined amount of time while an investigation is conducted.
