Record Nine Goals Power UC San Diego

Jason Brown scored nine goals in UC San Diego’s 19-10 victory over Claremont College Saturday, setting a school record for individual scoring in a water polo game. The previous record was seven.

In UCSD’s first game of the day at Claremont, Brown scored three goals helping UCSD defeat Air Force, 10-6. Because of this victory, UCSD which is 17-12 and ranked eighth in the NCAA Open Division, is assured of gaining the No. 1 seed in the Western Water Polo Assn. Championships Nov. 10-11-12.

CROSS COUNTRY

Wendy Peterson finished ninth overall to lead San Diego State’s women to a fifth-place finish in the Big West Cross Country Championships at Morley Field, Saturday.

UC Irvine took first with 23 points. The second-through-seventh-place teams--Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, Hawaii, SDSU, Fresno State and UC Santa Barbara--were separated by only 15 points.

Brigid Stirling (17:12.2) and Buffy Rabbitt (17:22.5), both of Irvine, finished one-two.

UC Irvine also took top honors in the men’s race, finishing with 26 points, barely squeaking by defending champion Fresno, which had 31 points.

Jason Lienau of Fresno broke the tape at 24:48.0, but Irvine monopolized the next four spots.

UC San Diego’s women won their own invitational with 28 points behind the second-place showing of Michelle Conlay (18:42). UCSD beat out Point Loma Nazarene College, 35 points, and U.S. International, 66.

In the men’s race, UCSD and Point Loma finished in a first-place tie with 35 points. Point Loma’s Goshu Tadese set a course record in 25:57.1, while Mike Fox finished third at 26:14 to lead UCSD.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego, ranked first in NCAA Division III, defeated visiting Biola, 6-15, 16-14, 17-15, 15-4. Diana Klintworth had 14 kills and Allison Hensleit had 13 kills for UCSD (17-12). Denise Baker led Biola (19-11) with 13 kills.

Point Loma Nazarene defeated host Azusa Pacific, 15-6, 15-3, 12-15, 15-11, in a District 3 game. Lynette Campbell had 12 kills and Janelle Dutton had 11 kills for Point Loma Nazarene (14-8, 6-6).

Point Loma Nazarene will play in the first round of conference playoffs Tuesday.

USIU dropped to 3-14 as San Francisco defeated the Lady Gulls in four games at Mira Mesa High, 15-9, 7-15, 15-7, 15-7. Heather Kelley led USIU in kills with 17.

MEN’S SOCCER

Point Loma Nazarene College defeated host Christ College Irvine, 4-1, to finish the season third in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Jim Novak scored two goals and Todd Bernard and Steve Cokkinis each scored one goal for Point Loma Nazarene (6-7-4, 3-2-1). Point Loma Nazarene led 4-0 when Tom Schultz scored for Christ College (6-8-2, 1-3-2) with five minutes remaining.

Freshman Mark Batchelor scored U.S. International University’s only goal in a 2-1 loss at New Mexico. It easily could have been 3-1, but goalie David Johnson blocked a penalty kick.
