CYPRESS : Car Club Donates $1,200 to Drug Fight

Share

A Cypress-based car club has donated $1,200 to the city’s Drug Awareness Resistance Program.

The Coastline Cameros of Southern California, which has 25 active members from Cypress, Anaheim and La Palma, held a car show on Oct. 8 at Cypress College and raised $600 for Dare, an anti-drug program aimed at fifth and sixth graders.

The group matched the money it raised with $600 from the club’s treasury and donated it to Dare.

“We wanted to prove that we’re not a bunch of bums and hoodlums,” said Frank Portugal, club vice president. “We’re out to change the image of a car club and show that we are responsible members of the community.”

After meeting with representatives from the Cypress Police Department six months ago, the group’s leaders chose Dare from a list of possible charities.

“We think it’s a good program that helps kids. It felt good to be doing something for the community and the kids,” said Kari Galbreath, club activity director.

Buoyed by their success, the group plans a second fund-raiser for next spring to raise more money for Dare.
