One of three holdup men fatally shot a Lake Elsinore man who refused their demands to hand over money Saturday, police said.

Eric Garcia, 22, died at the Brea Community Hospital early Saturday morning, about two hours after he was shot in the neck in front of an apartment complex in La Habra, Police Lt. Wayne Lowry said.

Garcia and two friends were walking to a friend’s home in the 1800 block of East La Habra Boulevard about 2 a.m. when they were approached by the three, Lowry said.

“They asked Garcia and his friends to hand over their money,” Lowry said. The victims said they had no money. There was a short argument, then one of the men opened fire with a handgun, hitting Garcia, Lowry said.

The bandits fled after shooting Garcia. Police are still searching for them, Lowry said.
