An El Cajon man was accidentally shot and killed during the opening weekend of Texas’ deer hunting season, authorities said.

Richard Greer Sr., a master sergeant assigned to Goodfellow Air Force Base in San Angelo, Texas, died after he was shot by another hunter in Tom Green County.

A 13-year-old boy was also accidentally killed over the weekend by his uncle while deer hunting in Nacogdoches County, authorities said.

Greer died Sunday morning while hunting with his son in a brushy area on the shore of Lake O.C. Fisher, about 10 miles northwest of San Angelo, according to the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Department.

“Another hunter thought Greer was a turkey moving in the brush, and fired his 12-gauge shotgun, hitting him in the upper chest,” Chief Deputy Pete Skains said.

Skains said Justice of the Peace Ruth Nicholson pronounced Greer dead at the scene and did not issue a ruling. Greer’s son was not injured.
