“Working Girl,” one of those triumph-of-the-underdog romantic comedies, worked its way up to the top, flushing “Rain Man” out of the No. 1 position on the Billboard magazine rental chart. The chart leader since early October, “Rain Man” was expected to be kingpin for a few more weeks, when powerhouse contenders like “Batman” and “Ghostbusters II” would be slugging it out for the rental championship. The comedies “Her Alibi” (No. 9), “Cousins” (No. 12) and “Skin Deep” (No. 14) have done well in the rental market. “Lean on Me,” the drama starring Morgan Freeman as the tough high school principal, is No. 13 but has yet to crack the Top 10.

*”Leviathan,” about an underwater expedition crew’s alien encounter, grossed a respectable $15.3 million at the box office. Starring Peter Weller and Richard Crenna, this horror thriller, which is similar to “The Abyss,” debuted at No. 19 on the rental chart. Though critics were lukewarm about this one, it’s a favorite among horror fans, who may have enough rental clout to boost it into the Top 10.
