NHL ROUNDUP : Jets Defeat Canucks, 3-2, on Lucky Goalin Overtime

Greg Paslawski’s fluke goal 46 seconds into overtime gave the Winnipeg Jets a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Wednesday night at Winnipeg.

Paslawski’s shot hit the foot of defenseman Doug Liudster and ricocheted past goaltender Steve Weeks for the victory.

The Jets also got goals from Paul Fenton and Gord Donnelly. Liudster and Jim Sandlak scored for the Canucks, who outshot Winnipeg, 31-20.

Vancouver’s Daryl Stanley was involved in two first-period fights, one each with Peter Taglianetti and Shawn Cronin.

There also was a second-period melee involving 10 players.

Montreal 3, New York Rangers 2--Stephane Richer scored two goals and Bobby Smith had the game-winner in the second period as the Canadiens continued their recent domination of the Rangers with a victory at New York.

The Canadiens beat the Rangers for the fifth consecutive time and have an 8-1-2 record against New York in the last 11 games. Goaltender Patrick Roy extended his career record against the Rangers to 4-0-1.

The Canadiens, 5-1-1 in their last seven games, retained a one-point lead over Buffalo in the Adams Division. The Rangers lead the Patrick Division at 10-4-3.

New Jersey 6, Quebec 3--Ken Daneyko had the first two-goal performance in an NHL game as the Devils won their first game under new Coach John Cunniff by beating the Nordiques at East Rutherford, N.J.

The Nordiques went down to a team-record eighth consecutive loss.

Cunniff, who joined the Devils as an assistant coach this season, was named coach Monday when Jim Schoenfeld was fired.

Buffalo 6, Hartford 3--Phil Housley and Pierre Turgeon each had a goal and two assists as the Sabres beat the Whalers at Hartford, Conn.

Rick Vaive, Mike Foligno, Doug Bodger and Christian Ruuttu also scored for the Sabres. who are 5-0-1 in their last six games.
