The Scene: A cocktail party celebrating the newly renovated Frederick’s of Hollywood lingerie store on Hollywood Boulevard. Among the changes, an exterior no longer purple, now gray with accents of shocking pink. And inside, a permanent “lingerie museum” has been installed featuring donations from Madonna, Lana Turner, Shirley MacLaine, Cher and others. Milton Berle had the whole place in stitches (including 14 otherwise grim-faced security guards) with his off-color stand-up routine. By the way, Mayor Bradley, in absentia, declared Wednesday Frederick’s of Hollywood Day.

Quoted: City Councilman Michael Woo: “This is the biggest cultural event in my district tonight.”

The Buzz: Zsa Zsa-bashing continues to be cocktail party sport, especially on this particular evening since Zsa Zsa’s black lace bra and underwear from “Lili” are displayed in the museum along with a photo of the actress wearing them in the 1953 movie. To wit: “Is that Zsa Zsa?--God, was she young once.” . . . “Look, Zsa Zsa did something else in life.” . . . And from Milton Berle, “By the way, Zsa Zsa has a new perfume. It’s called Citation. And you slap it on.”

Who Was There: Aside from a few colorful types--female celebrity impersonator Charles Pierce (“P-i-e-r-c-e, as in Mildred”), party boy Cesar Romero with Henny Backus, and Bill Welsh, president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce--the crowd consisted primarily of gray-suited lingerie suppliers, shopping center developers (154 Frederick’s stores now dot the nation), catalogue printers and other Frederick’s business associates.

Overheard: “Belinda Carlisle’s got it all over these other people, size wise,” said a man inspecting the goods in the museum.

One Moment in Time: Charles Pierce, while checking out the exhibit, “My God. Mamie Van Doren uses the same long-line bra that I do.”

Chow: A sumptuous spread, especially for a cocktail party, including sliced tenderloin on rosemary toast, spinach and goat cheese timbales, caviar torte, pasta with wild mushroom sauce and assorted finger sweets.

Nice Touch: Fifty students from Hollywood High hip-hopping on Hollywood Boulevard to the sound of Don Miller’s Big Band.
