Cerritos : ABC District Grants 6% Pay Raises in New Contracts

The ABC Unified School District has approved three-year contracts with salary and benefits increases for teachers and classified employees that will cost $4.5 million for the 1989-90 school year.

Last week, the school board granted new contracts to the district’s three bargaining units, including the ABC Federation of Teachers, the California School Employees Assn. (CSEA) and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCEME).

All three units received 6% salary increases retroactive to July, 1989.

Under the new contract, the district’s 1,100 teachers will receive a total of $3.5 million in salaries, health and other benefits.

The 6% hike will push starting teachers’ salaries from $22,904 to $24,278 a year. The top salary scale for teachers with 30 years of service will rise to $47,043.

Members of the CSEA will receive a total of $492,000 in salaries and benefits during the first year of the contract, while AFSCEME members will get a total of $490,000.

There are 940 members in both CSEA and AFSCEME, which include clerk, custodians, bus drivers and food service workers. All bargaining units will be able to open negotiations on salaries and other benefits next year.

The new raises will come from the district’s 1989-90 general budget of $91.7 million.
