From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Thousands of sailors at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia carried out their second and final day of a safety “stand down,” while Navy warships, aircraft and shore facilities around the world began returning to normal duties. The safety review was ordered after a series of 10 unrelated Navy accidents that resulted in 10 deaths over the last three weeks. Sailors took part in safety meetings in ship missile rooms, firefighting drills on flight decks and classroom meetings at facilities on shore. By today, the Navy’s nearly 600,000 full-time personnel and 566 ships are expected to return to their chief mission of battle readiness.
