Federal Agencies’ Feud Delays Bay Area Dredging
The failure of two federal agencies to designate a new offshore dumping site has meant a two-year delay in plans to deepen channels at the ports of Oakland and Richmond, according to a report by the General Accounting Office. The delayed projects are expected to bring $31 million in economic benefits to the Bay Area.
The GAO report, released Thursday, said the Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency are responsible for taking steps to safely dispose of the sludge that must be dredged. About 74 million cubic yards of sludge is expected to be scraped from the bay bottom between now and 1995.
