SOUTHEAST ROUNDUP : Tennessee Spins Webb and Catches Mississippi

Chuck Webb rushed for a school-record 294 yards and scored two touchdowns Saturday to rally ninth-ranked Tennessee to a 33-21 victory over Mississippi at Knoxville, Tenn.

The Volunteers, 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Southeastern Conference, put together two long scoring drives in the fourth quarter to come back from a 21-20 deficit.

Tyrone Ashley returned the second-half kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to give Mississippi a 21-17 lead, but the Rebels (6-4 and 3-3) managed only six first downs the rest of the day.

Greg Burke kicked a 37-yard field goal for Tennessee to cut it to 21-20 after three quarters before the Volunteer offense took over.

Tennessee drove 80 yards in 10 plays, with Webb scoring from the three, to take a 26-21 lead with 9:43 to play. A two-point conversion attempt failed.

On their next possession, the Volunteers used more than five minutes to drive 82 yards in 11 plays, all but one on the ground, with Greg Amsler scoring from the one with 3:22 left. Webb got 62 of those yards in five carries.

Quarterback John Darnell completed 14 of 27 passes for 168 yards and set a Mississippi single-season passing record. His 2,128 yards broke the mark of 2,026 set by Kent Austin in 1982.

Willie Green caught five passes, extending his school-record to 35 games with at least one reception.

Alabama 37, Southern Mississippi 14--Gary Hollingsworth passed for 248 yards and two touchdowns, and Siran Stacy scored twice and set a school record as the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide won a nonconference game at Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Alabama is 10-0 going into its final regular-season game Dec. 2 at No. 11 Auburn. The Crimson Tide can win the Southeastern Conference championship outright with a victory. Indications are that Alabama will go to the Sugar Bowl regardless of the outcome.

Hollingsworth hit Lamonde Russell on scoring pass plays of 10 and three yards as Alabama won its 12th consecutive game. Stacy scored on runs of six and 24 yards and has 18 touchdowns this season, breaking Bobby Humphrey’s school mark of 17 set in 1987.

The Golden Eagles (4-6) scored on a 47-yard pass play from Brett Favre to Eugene Rowell and an 11-yard run by Rickey Bradley.

Alabama leads the series 22-3-2, with Southern Mississippi’s last victory coming in 1982.

Auburn 20, Georgia 3--Reggie Slack passed for 230 yards and a touchdown as the the No. 11 Tigers stayed alive in the Southeastern Conference race at Athens, Ga.

Freshman Darrell Williams rushed for 128 yards and one touchdown for the Tigers, 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference. A victory over Alabama on Dec. 2 will give Auburn a share of the conference title with the Crimson Tide.

Alabama already has secured at least a share of the championship.

It was Auburn’s fourth victory in a row to give it a 44-42-7 lead in the deep South’s oldest series, one that began in 1892.

Georgia (6-4 and 4-3) was never in the game after Greg Taylor scored on a 24-yard pass play from Slack with 10:57 left in the half to give Auburn a 10-0 lead.

Williams scored his touchdown on a one-yard run later in the second quarter, and Auburn’s other scoring came on field goals of 32 and 21 yards by Win Lyle.

Georgia avoided a shutout when John Kasay kicked a 23-yard field goal late in the third quarter.

Florida 38, Kentucky 28--At Gainesville, Fla., Tony Lomack scored on a 99-yard kickoff return and Emmitt Smith rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns to help the Gators keep their bowl hopes alive.

Florida improved to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference and broke a two-game losing streak. It was the Gators’ best regular-season finish since 1985.

Kentucky, which hasn’t won at Gainesville since 1979, also started the day with hopes of staying in contention for a bowl bid. The Wildcats dropped to 6-4 and 2-4 despite getting two touchdowns apiece from Alfred Rawls and Phil Logan.

LSU 44, Mississippi State 20--Tommy Hodson passed for two touchdowns, Harvey Williams ran for a pair and David Browndyke kicked field goals of 49, 50 and 48 yards to lead the Tigers at Baton Rouge, La.

Jay Egloff also scored for LSU on a seven-yard run.

LSU is 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the Southeastern Conference. Mississippi State is 5-5 and 1-5.

Hodson completed 12 of 21 passes for 208 yards. His touchdown pass plays were 10 yards to Eddie Fuller in the first quarter and 55 yards to Tony Moss in the second.
