Clarkston Hines and his Duke teammates were one angry bunch back in September when they were 1-3.

Seven weeks later, the Blue Devils are smiling, and Hines is all over the NCAA record books after a 41-0 victory over North Carolina Saturday at Chapel Hill, N.C.

It was the seventh consecutive victory for Duke (8-3 and 6-1) and gave the Blue Devils a tie for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship along with Virginia.

Duke hadn’t won seven games in a row since going 9-0 in 1941. The Blue Devils also tied for the ACC title that year, and haven’t won or tied for the title since.

“You just have to give credit to everybody for just hanging in there and not pointing fingers,” Hines said after he caught three touchdown passes to raise his NCAA record to 38.

Hines ended up with more than 1,000 yards in pass receptions for the third straight season. Hines’ eight catches for 162 yards Saturday gave him 1,149 yards this season.

Virginia 48, Maryland 21--Shawn Moore passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more as the No. 16 Cavaliers won at College Park, Md., to gain a share of the ACC title.

Marcus Wilson added two touchdowns and the Cavaliers (10-2 and 6-1) scored three times in the final 10:05 of the first half as Virginia notched its first 10-victory season in 100 years.

Clemson 45, South Carolina 0--Terry Allen scored twice and rushed for 97 yards before re-injuring his knee as the No. 15 Tigers routed the Gamecocks at Columbia, S.C.

Allen, who had missed two games and played sparingly in two others since injuring his knee Oct. 7 against Virginia, scored on 12-yard and one-yard runs in the first quarter. But Allen re-injured his left knee with 4:04 left in the half, was wheeled to the locker room and did not return.

Clemson, apparently headed to the Gator Bowl, wound up 9-2. South Carolina, still hoping for a bid to the All-American Bowl, is 6-4-1.

Southwestern Louisiana 29, Arkansas State 28--Quarterback Brian Mitchell, who ran for four touchdowns, fell 34 passing yards short of becoming the first quarterback in NCAA history to rush for 1,000 and pass for 2,000 yards in a single season as the Rajin’ Cajuns won at Lafayette, La.

Mitchell scored a touchdown on a seven-yard run with 40 seconds left and then passed to Corey Williams for the two-point conversion after a 77-yard drive that was kept alive by a fourth-and-10 pass to Quent McCullum, good for 19 yards.

Mitchell’s fourth touchdown improved his NCAA record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback to 47.

Virginia Tech 25, North Carolina State 23--Roger Brown intercepted two passes, returning the first one 55 yards for a touchdown late in the first half, and the Hokies upset the Wolfpack at Raleigh, N.C.

Brown’s second interception came with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game and was off backup quarterback Preston Poag, who threw into the end zone. Tech was leading 25-16 at the time.

Poag was playing because Shane Montgomery jammed some fingers. Montgomery returned in the final minutes and threw a four-yard scoring pass to Chris Corders with 1:04 remaining.

The Hokies improved to 6-4-1, while the Wolfpack dropped to 7-4.

Georgia Tech 43, Wake Forest 14--Jerry Mays ran for 135 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead the Yellow Jackets to an ACC victory over the Demon Deacons at Atlanta.
