YORBA LINDA : Nixon’s Birthplace May Go on New Flag

Share

The City Council will vote tonight on whether to adopt a new city flag picturing the birthplace of former President Richard M. Nixon.

City Manager Arthur C. Simonian will present a report recommending that the new flag feature the city seal, which includes the house of Nixon’s birth and a background of stars and stripes.

The report also suggested that the city retain the existing flag.

“The new flag will represent the positive developments associated with the Nixon Birthplace and Library,” the report said. “The old flag serves the purpose of preserving the historical integrity of the community.”

The old flag is a solid orange banner with a small panorama set inside a circle at the flag’s center. The panorama shows a man, a horse and a bird, with rays of sun coming over hills in the background. Above the circle in white letters is the city’s name; curved below is its motto, “Land of Gracious Living.”

Mayor Henry W. Wedaa suggested the flag change at the council’s Oct. 17 meeting.
