Czech Dissident Spurns Visa Offer
Reuters
PRAGUE, Czechoslovakia —
Leading Czechoslovak dissident Vaclav Havel said Monday he has declined a government offer of a visa to travel to Sweden because of the unrest in his country.
“I do not want to serve as a front for this regime, which would claim they let a leading dissident travel abroad, and thus try to mask the drastic repressions we are witnessing.”
Havel had been invited to Sweden to accept the Olof Palme award for contribution to the struggle for human rights.
