Design for Art Center Accepted
Torrance City Council members have accepted final architectural drawings for the city’s $11-million Cultural Arts Center and are seeking bids from contractors.
The city hopes to select a contractor and break ground on the long-delayed complex by Jan. 25, Management Programs Administrator Phil Tilden said. Construction is expected to take about 18 months.
Plans call for the new Civic Center complex to include a 497-seat theater, Japanese garden, community meeting hall, arts and crafts studios, and dance and exercise rooms.
Construction of the complex was delayed for more than two years after the city fired its first architect, H. Wendell Mounce & Associates, for submitting plans that would have brought construction bids far over budget.
The current architect, Liebhardt, Weston & Associates, began redesigning the complex under the supervision of a project management consultant in April, 1988.
