A natural gas main ruptured Wednesday in Clairemont near Mt. Aguilar and Mt. Alifan drives, forcing the evacuation of 40 people, a San Diego Fire Department spokesman said.

Workers at a nearby office building were evacuated and a three-block area near the main break was closed to traffic after the 8:50 a.m. leak, spokesman Larry Stewart said.

The 2-inch line broke when a private contractor was doing road work in the area, Stewart said. San Diego Gas & Electric crews took an hour to “pinch off” the break before workers were allowed to return.

Firefighters said there were no explosions or injuries as the crews repaired the broken main.
