Top-ranked Steffi Graf of West Germany rallied to defeat Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, in the opening round of a women’s tennis tournament at Essen, West Germany.
In other matches, Monica Seles of Yugoslavia beat Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-1, and Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina defeated Zina Garrison, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The eight players taking part in the tournament are split into two groups, with winners advancing to the final.
