2-A QUARTERFINAL : El Camino Yields Score, Then Routs Santana

Share

El Camino Coach Herb Meyer can find so little complain about these days he’s beginning to sound like Lou Holtz.

After second-ranked El Camino dismantled Santana Friday night, 42-7, Meyer found himself searching for lowpoints.

“I think that letting people score first is getting a little old,” Meyer said after his team allowed its opponents the initial score for the third consecutive week.

Poor Herb.

After that first score, El Camino (11-1) has outscored Carlsbad, Valhalla and Santana, 132-0.

A major part of that production is senior waterbug Brian Madlangbayan. In those three games Madlangbayan, a 5-foot-6, 167 pounder, has scored nine touchdowns, including three Friday.

And those numbers have been compiled in just over six quarters of football.

Friday, Madlangbayan, who is not being recruited by Division I schools, ran for 139 yards in seven carries in the first half and finished with 171 yards in nine carries.

Despite playing with a heavy chest cold and vomiting at halftime, Madlangbayan broke Darron Norris’ school record for touchdowns in a season with 24. He scored on runs of 1, 49 and 55, the last two coming on cutbacks.

“The cutbacks are not planned,’ he said. “I just look for the hole. I think my vision is my best asset.”

Madlangbayan was not El Camino’s only asset, though. Quarterback Joe Malek, just 5-4, completed 10 of 12 passes for 96 yards, 86 of them belonging to flanker Jerry Avery.

After a fairly even first quarter--El Camino led, 14-7, the Wildcats quickness on offense and defense never allowed Santana a chance to comeback.

“This was the most speed we’ve seen all year,” Santana Coach Doug Coffin said. “They could have beat us by a lot more. Herb was nice.”

El Camino outgained Santana (7-3-1) 424-240. Santana’s two bright spots were running backs Josh Lambert and Craig Wilkerson, who ran for 105 and 102 yards.
