It turned into a tale of two Tennessee teams for Kentucky linebacker Tony Massey.

After trailing, 10-9, at halftime, the eighth-ranked Volunteers, behind Tony Thompson’s one-yard touchdown run and Alvin Harper’s 22-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter, rolled to a 31-10 victory over Kentucky on Saturday.

“The second half it seemed like they had a brand new team out there and we were sucking air,” Massey said.

Tennessee limited Kentucky to three first downs, 16 rushing yards and three passing yards in the final two quarters.

“The second half our defense played as well as they have all year,” Tennessee Coach Johnny Majors said.

Tennessee will learn after next Saturday’s Alabama-Auburn game whether it will be playing in the Sugar, Cotton or Hall of Fame Bowl.

The Volunteers close their regular season at Knoxville against rival Vanderbilt next Saturday.

Tennessee (9-1 overall, 5-1 in the Southeastern Conference) won its 20th consecutive November game and retained possession of the border rivalry’s Beer Barrel in defeating Kentucky (6-5, 2-5) for the fifth consecutive time.

The turnaround in the game came when Kentucky’s Alfred Rawls was stopped for a six-yard loss in a fourth-and-one situation at the Tennessee 33 with 6:59 left in the third quarter.

Tennessee then mounted a 12-play, 61-yard drive that ended on Thompson’s run for the go-ahead touchdown 4:14 later.
