Ware Passes Houston Over Texas Tech
Quarterback Andre Ware threw four touchdown passes, two to wide receiver Manny Hazard, and No. 13th-ranked Houston turned four of five Texas Tech turnovers into 27 points Saturday en route to a 40-24 Southwest Conference victory.
Ware and Hazard’s two touchdowns gave the passing combination 18 for the season, breaking the NCAA record for touchdown passes in a season by one quarterback and one receiver. The record of 16 was shared by Dennis Shaw and Tom Reynolds of San Diego State in 1969 and Bob Parker and Ernest Jennings of Air Force in 1970.
Texas Tech finished the regular season 8-3 (5-3 in the SWC), its best record since 1976, and accepted an invitation to play Duke (8-3) in the Dec. 28 All-American Bowl at Birmingham, Ala. The Red Raiders are ranked No. 18 in the nation.
Houston (8-2, 5-2) is on NCAA probation and ineligible for postseason play.
