TENNIS ROUNDUP : Seles Wins Again to Earn Berth Against Maleeva

Monica Seles, the 15-year-old Yugoslav, easily beat Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain, 6-2, 6-2, Saturday to advance to the finals of a $500,000 women’s tournament at Essen, West Germany.

In the other semifinal match, Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria upset Argentina’s Gabriela Sabatini, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Seles, who lives in Florida, dominated the French Open winner throughout the match, winning in 61 minutes.

Behind 2-4 in the second set, the 17-year-old Sanchez Vicario tried to rally, but Seles used powerful forehands and well-placed shots.

The 22-year-old Maleeva took 1 hour 58 minutes to beat Sabatini, 19, who is ranked No. 3 in the world.

Martin Jaite of Argentina upset second-seeded Jay Berger, 6-4, 6-4, to win a $305,000 tournament at Itaparica, Brazil.

The 25-year-old Jaite, ranked 14th, used a powerful serve, crisp baseline volleys and well-placed passing shots. Berger, 22, ranked 10th, played poorly throughout the match and never could seem to find his rhythm.

Marc Rosset of Switzerland will play Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia today in the finals of the Copenhagen Open.

In the semifinals, the 19-year old Rosset, ranked 57th in the world, eliminated Patrick McEnroe, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3, and Srejber defeated Christian Bergstrom of Sweden, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
