Share

The City Council elected Cecilia L. Age as mayor Monday night by a 4-1 vote.

Councilwoman Gail H. Kerry, who cast the dissenting vote, said Age’s selection was a decision by the council’s “majority of three” referring to Age and members Margaret M. Arnold and Councilman Walter Bowman.

“I feel the choice is disappointing but to be expected, with a 2-to-3 block vote,” Kerry said.

Age, referring to rifts among council members, stressed unity during the coming year.

“This is a time to pull the city together,” she said. “This is a time to join hands and start over.”

Age said that in spite of Kerry’s comments, she is happy to be selected for the job, which is largely ceremonial.

“I’d like to say I’m very pleased to be mayor of the city. We have a very exciting year ahead of us with the race track proposal that is due to come before us.”

The council elected John Kanel mayor pro tem.

Age, 39, was elected to the council in 1988. She is vice president of Security Pacific Bank’s residential real estate operations. She and her husband, Steve Age, have two sons, James and Michael.
