LOCAL : Eu’s Son Running as Republican
Matthew Fong, a former Democrat and the son of Democratic Secretary of State March Fong Eu, announced today that he will buck his family’s party preference and run as a Republican for state controller.
Fong, 36, a lawyer and former campaign manager for his mother, said he will run on a platform of “honesty, integrity and ethics--virtues that have almost vanished from our political landscape.”
He opened a news conference at the Los Angeles Press Club by apologizing for a 15-minute delay. “I was waiting for my mother to show up. . . . I guess she’s not going to come,” he added to the laughter and applause of about a dozen political supporters, including state GOP Chairman Frank Visco.
