Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Italy, Spain and West Germany will be the seeded teams for the 1990 World Cup, Joao Havelange, the president of soccer’s world governing body, said in an interview published today.

The seeds for the 1990 World Cup will be announced formally Dec. 7, two days before the draw. The newspaper reported that Havelange said Argentina, West Germany and Belgium would be seeded on the basis of the 1986 World Cup results in Mexico; Argentina won the title, West Germany finished second and Belgium was a semifinalist.

“Italy, as host country, and Brazil are also certain seeds, while Spain is going to take over for Mexico,” Havelange was quoted as saying.
