Dreyfuss, the canine star of the television show “Empty Nest,” celebrated his fourth birthday in style at Hollywood’s first celebrity dog birthday party today. In attendance were legendary canines Rin Tin Tin, Benji, Buck ( from the sitcom ‘Married With Children’) and Einstein (‘Back to the Future’). . . .

The food company created by actor Paul Newman has been honored for the money it has raised for charity. Gov. William A. O’Neill gave the Connecticut Governor’s Laurel Award for Responsible Social Involvement to Westport-based Newman’s Own Food. Newman’s Own donates all of its profits from the sale of its products--lemonade, spaghetti sauce, salad dressing and popcorn--to charity. Since it was founded seven years ago, it has given out more than $22 million. . . . Speaking of millions, William G. McGowan, founder of MCI Communications Corp., has donated $3 million to King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the largest gift in the small Roman Catholic school’s 43-year history. McGowan’s gift will help endow new faculty positions and help pay for a $6-million home for a business school to be named in McGowan’s honor.
