Dial the Dead: The Grateful Dead has come up with a novel way to help victims of the San Francisco Bay Area earthquake. Callers to a special “900” telephone number (900-847-8470) will hear snatches of the Dead’s song “California Earthquake” and a message from guitarist Bob Weir saying: “The earthquake is no longer front-page news but we can’t forget there are thousands who have lost their homes and businesses. We can all help and we all should. You never know when this kind of disaster can land on your doorstep.” There’s a $5 charge for the call and the proceeds go to the Red Cross for aid and shelter for quake victims.
