Two teen-agers were struck by a car that jumped the sidewalk in a high-speed police chase Friday night in East San Diego.
According to a San Diego police spokesman, the car careened into Erika Caffery, 15, and broke both her legs. Caffery is listed in fair condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Fourteen-year-old Danny Williams was not seriously hurt.
The chase began at 9:30 p.m. when police spotted a car traveling west on Dwight Street, near 41st Street, and identified it as stolen, said spokesman Bill Robinson. When a police officer turned on her lights and siren, the driver started speeding and jumped the sidewalk, striking the two youths.
The driver, Ernest Spain, continued until he struck a garage in the 3500 block of 41st Street. Police arrested Spain, a 36-year-old San Diego resident. He is being held on charges of felony hit-and-run, auto theft, driving with a revoked license and willful flight with injury. Bail has been set at $15,250.
