Northrop Chief Honored: Northrop Chairman Thomas V. Jones, scheduled to retire as chief executive of the Los Angeles aerospace firm at the end of December, was awarded the 1989 Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy. The Aero Club of Washington, which presented the award, cited Jones for “imagination and technical brilliance over a period of 47 years, making significant and enduring contributions to the continued pre-eminence of the American aerospace industry.” Jones’ controversial tenure as the head of Northrop spanned two decades, during which the company grew into a major military contractor and a leader in aeronautics technology. The Wright Brothers Trophy was created in 1945. Past recipients have included Charles Lindbergh, Donald W. Douglas, Juan Trippe and Igor Sikorsky.
