Sen. Kennedy Tours Harbor Medical Center

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) toured the Harbor/UCLA Medical Center in Torrance Tuesday as part of a national tour to underscore what he termed the country’s “enormously overburdened” health care system.

“It’s imperative that we as a society come to grips with this problem,” Kennedy said after visiting the emergency room and the high-risk infant clinic at the county facility. “The trauma centers are being overwhelmed and with the expansion of AIDS and drug abuse in this country, it may be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.”

Following his brief tour, Kennedy, chairman of the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee, held a field hearing in Torrance to discuss problems faced by the elderly and the uninsured.
