NEWPORT BEACH : Council Votes to Toughen Buildings

Share

The City Council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance to improve the safety of about 100 unreinforced masonry buildings considered liable to earthquake damage.

The ordinance is part of the city’s move to comply with a 1986 state law that requires cities in areas prone to earthquakes to rehabilitate structures that do not meet certain standards.

The Building Department, in conjunction with Oscar Larson & Associates in Eureka, an engineering consulting firm, is working on the list of buildings, all in commercial districts. The list must be forwarded to the state Seismic Safety Commission by Jan 1, 1990.

Those buildings identified as the most hazardous will be required to have reinforcements installed by Jan. 1, 1994.
