General Dynamics’ Convair Division has received another contract from the Navy to produce 280 more Tomahawk sea-launched cruise missiles. The contract is worth $238 million to Convair through 1992 but it will not result in more jobs. About 2,000 Convair employees in San Diego now work on the Tomahawk cruise-missile program.

Convair has produced and delivered 900 of the missiles to the Navy so far this decade. The missiles are launched on Navy ships and submarines. Although the Tomahawk can be armed with nuclear warheads, most have conventional warheads. The Navy has a total stated requirement of 4,000 of the missiles.

A General Dynamics spokesman said the the recent contract “assures that Convair will produce 70% of the 400 Tomahawks authorized by Congress for fiscal 1990.” Convair and McDonnell Douglas compete annually for Tomahawk procurements under the government’s dual sourcing program.
