COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Missouri Slips Past Arkansas

Doug Smith scored the last of his 24 points on a layup with 12 seconds left Wednesday night, leading No. 4 Missouri over No. 7 Arkansas, 89-88, in a battle of unbeatens at Fayetteville, Ark.

Mario Credit had given Arkansas an 88-87 lead with a jump hook with 51 seconds remaining. After Smith scored, the Razorbacks’ Lee Mayberry missed a long jump shot in the final seconds.

Missouri, of the Big Eight, is 8-0. Arkansas, of the Southwest Conference, is 5-1.

The 6-foot-10 Smith and 6-9 Nathan Buntin, who also scored 24 points, consistently got inside Arkansas’ defense. The Tigers had 16 offensive rebounds and shot 19 layups.

Todd Day scored 26 points and Credit added 20 for Arkansas. Mayberry had 16, all in the first half.

No. 3 Georgetown 92, St. Leo 51--Dikembe Mutombo scored 15 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked eight shots as the Hoyas won their 23rd consecutive home game.

The Hoyas (6-0) never trailed at Landover, Md., using a decided height advantage to easily dispose of the Division II Monarchs. With Mutombo, a 7-2 junior, and 6-10 center Alonzo Mourning clogging the middle, St. Leo was forced to take the majority of its shots from the perimeter.

Mourning scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds, and Mark Tillmon and Milton Bell each scored 13.

St. Leo (4-3), with only one player taller than 6-7, was outrebounded, 32-13, in the first half, when Georgetown took a 38-21 lead. Mutombo had 11 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks in the first half.

Washington 74, Eastern Washington 58--Eldridge Recasner scored 20 points and Brent Merritt added 17 as the Huskies won at Seattle.

Recasner scored 11 points in the second half, including seven in the final 3:41 for the Huskies (4-2).

Minnesota 89, Detroit 61--Willie Burton and Melvin Newbern combined for 26 points during a second-half scoring burst that helped the Golden Gophers to the easy victory at Detroit.

Minnesota (4-1) led, 55-48, with 7:40 to play when Burton and Newbern mounted the 26-4 spurt that made it 81-52 with 2:19 remaining. Burton scored 14 points during the spurt and Newbern had 12.

Burton, Newbern and Walter Bond each finished with 19 points to lead Minnesota. Detroit, which made only 35% from the field, fell to 3-2.

Seton Hall 79, Rutgers 74--Senior forward Michael Cooper and freshman guard Terry Dehere each scored 20 points as the Pirates held off two second-half rallies at Piscataway, N.J.

DeHere scored 15 points in the second half for Seton Hall (5-0), which scored only one basket in the final four minutes of play. The Pirates scored their final 12 points from the free-throw line.
