Roy Wegerle, the soccer forward who could represent four countries in the World Cup, has chosen the United States ahead of England, Scotland and West Germany.

Wegerle, who was born in South Africa, has an American wife and wants to live in Florida, ended speculation about his international career when he said he intended to apply for American citizenship and hoped to play on the U.S. team.

Wegerle, whose mother was born in Scotland and whose father was born in West Germany, also is qualified to play for England through residency rights.

But Wegerle, a former Tampa Bay Rowdies star, said his allegiance was to the United States.

” . . . I am just showing my loyalty to the United States of America,” the 25-year-old striker said. “The U.S.A. was the first to make an approach to me and I have given my word that I will play for them in Italy.”

The Americans have qualified for the World Cup finals.
