$10-Million Man Shuns Lotto Attention

Arthur N. Shaw knows better than to flaunt his newly acquired millions.

The 70-year-old Santa Ana man who won $10 million in the Lotto 6/49 game earlier this week says he will continue living as he has for the past four years at a mobile home park, with few, if any, changes in his life style.

He is Orange County’s fourth new millionaire in the county’s monthlong winning streak of successful quick pickers, big spinners and jackpot winners.

“I don’t want to be so well known,” said Shaw as he watched television football and talked with his daughter on the telephone at his trailer Saturday afternoon. “I’ll have to hire me a bodyguard or something.”

But standing more than 6 feet, and dressed in rugged boots, blue jeans and a khaki shirt that only partly concealed his muscular build, the retired rubber factory worker appeared not to need protection.

The divorced father of nine, whose gray hair poked from under a navy knit cap, said he is eager for the news of his fortune to settle down, and his curious neighbors to let his life return to normal.

Walter Downey, assistant manager of the trailer park, said he doesn’t think Shaw realizes that he is $10,340,000 richer. He said Shaw still works his part-time job at a nearby market, and the only difference has been that, since Wednesday’s jackpot, they haven’t had a chance to swap World War II stories as they usually do

Downey says he sometimes buys lottery tickets for Shaw, although he didn’t buy Shaw’s winning ticket, and frequently keeps an eye on his trailer when Shaw travels to Las Vegas.

June Park, co-owner of Santa Liquor Market & Deli, where Shaw regularly buys his lottery tickets and purchased the winning ticket last week, said Shaw is a regular customer, but she hasn’t seen him since his lucky day.

“I don’t think he’s going to show up in a while,” she said. “He wants to keep a low profile.”
