New Kids Score Top Sales: New Kids on the Block owned the block in 1989. The teen-beat heart-throbs were the year’s top-selling pop artists, according to Billboard magazine’s calculations combining sales and radio play. The group’s “Hangin’ Tough” album--one of three it currently has in the Top 30--was 1989’s second-biggest album after Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel.” Brown came in second as top artist, followed by Guns N’ Roses, Paula Abdul and Milli Vanilli.
