A trucker has told police he saw what appeared to be a race between Ramon Ramos’ sports car and another vehicle shortly before the high-speed crash that left the Trail Blazer rookie forward in a coma.

“There’s one person who reports the race,” Oregon State Police 1st Sgt. Mel Thomas said Wednesday. “He saw Ramos’ vehicle going at a high rate of speed and four or five seconds later, he saw another vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.”

The witness is a truck driver who was pulling out of a truck scale station two miles north of Woodburn on Interstate 5 about 3 a.m. Saturday when Ramos’ red Nissan 300ZX and a dark blue Thunderbird sped by in the northbound lanes.

Five miles north of the station, Ramos was traveling between 84 m.p.h. and 102 m.p.h. when his car hit a patch of ice, flew into the air and landed hard, rolled over eight times and ejected Ramos, police said.

Thomas said police would like to talk to the driver of the Thunderbird, “to kind of put a cap on the investigation.”

Ramos has remained comatose in critical condition in Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital.
