Terminal Evacuated in LAX Bomb Scare

Los Angeles International Airport’s Terminal Two was evacuated for about 45 minutes Thursday afternoon while Los Angeles police bomb squad experts examined a “suspicious” piece of luggage and finally determined that it was harmless.

The evacuation of the terminal, which is used by Air Canada, Air China, Avianca Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Pan American World Airways, caused a short delay on several flights and Northwest switched several departures to Terminal Three. There was no estimate of how many people were evacuated.

Police said the luggage aroused suspicion because it had been dumped into a trash container in a men’s room. They did not disclose the contents of the bag. Last month, the bomb squad blew up a piece of luggage after baggage X-rays convinced U.S. Customs officials that the suitcase contained an explosive device. It turned out to be a Nintendo game.
