‘End Hunger’ Project

I was appalled at the attitudes displayed by Bill Cosby and Marshall Herskovitz, executive producer of “thirtysomething,” in the Dec. 11 article, “Big 3 Networks Tackle Social Ills in Support of ‘End Hunger’ Project.”

Cosby may be politically opposed to the Bush Administration, but is he also opposed to ending world hunger? His refusal to air the special 900 number and an address from the President concerning the importance of volunteerism portrays him as purely selfish.

Herskovitz must have no conscience if he can put this issue aside simply by labeling it “propaganda.”

Issues such as world hunger have become political when they never should have. It’s about time we put a stop to that, but, unfortunately, people like Cosby and Herskovitz prevent it.

It’s about time television stopped hiding behind a screen and faced the real world.

“thirtysomething” broadcast the 900 telephone number as a participant in “Prime Time to End Hunger,” a weeklong project in which popular network programs focused on homelessness, hunger and other social ills. In Diane Haithman’s article, Herskovitz said he opposed producers participating in any special-interest group’s agenda and he expressed concern about TV being used for propaganda purposes.
