LA HABRA — A man who apparently had been drinking went out for a bicycle ride Monday, veered across several lanes of traffic and slammed into the side of a limousine, suffered serious head injuries, police said.
The man was listed in critical condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Sgt. Ron Harryman said the bicyclist has not been identified. He carried no identification, but police describe him as a male Latino, 5 feet, 6 inches tall, 160 pounds, and 25 to 30 years old with black hair and brown eyes.
The man was riding a Huffy 10-speed in the right-hand lane of westbound La Habra Boulevard near Marian Street about 12:25 p.m. when the accident happened, Harryman said. Witnesses told police that the man suddenly veered across both westbound lanes and onto the other side of the road, where he smashed into the driver’s side of a limousine that was traveling about 30 m.p.h.
Harryman said officers on the scene smelled alcohol on the bicyclist’s breath. He was taken to the medical center with serious head injuries.
Harryman said the limousine driver was not cited. Police are requesting help in identifying the bicyclist. Anyone with information is asked to call (213) 905-9750.
