Paint It Green: The Rolling Stones’ high-profile U.S. concert tour was easily the rock circuit’s biggest money-maker of 1989, according to year-end figures compiled by the trade magazine Performance. The veteran group’s “Steel Wheels” tour grossed more than $80 million, easily doubling the take of its closest competitor. The rest of the Top-10 finishers were The Who ($34,027,052), Bon Jovi ($28,795,466), Grateful Dead ($26,096,848), Neil Diamond ($18,028,370), Metallica ($13,237,339), the road show Fiddler on the Roof” starring Topol ($10,399,372), Rod Stewart ($10,375,487), Barry Manilow ($8,620,452) and R.E.M. ($8,219,367).
