The San Diego Police Department’s gang unit is investigating two unrelated shootings that wounded two people late Wednesday night in Southeast and East San Diego, authorities said.

The first incident occurred at 9:42 p.m. in the 3800 block of Logan Avenue, said Sgt. Ted Mims. Michael Ellison, 19, of San Diego, and an unidentified friend were walking on 38th Street when they passed a man who said something to them, then pulled out a gun and started shooting, Mims said.

The man fired eight shots from a .22-caliber automatic handgun, one of which struck Ellison in the head, Mims said. Paramedics took Ellison to Physicians and Surgeons Hospital, where he was treated for a superficial head wound and released, Mims said.

The second shooting occurred two hours later at 40th Street and University Avenue when Anthony Craig Mack, 28, of San Diego was driven off the road by a man in an Audi Fox, Mims said. When Mack pulled over, the driver of the Audi began shooting at him, he said.

Mack fled his car and was shot once in the head, Mims said. He was taken to Mercy Hospital where he was treated for a superficial head wound and released, Mims said.

Gang investigators are still looking for suspects in the shootings.
