UCSD Women Lose in Semifinals

UC San Diego’s women’s basketball team was defeated by William Jewell, 79-60, Friday night in a championship semifinal of the UCSD Tournament at Triton Gym. Darla Hustead led William Jewell with 22 points. Chris Ely had 14 for UCSD. The Tritons play Franklin & Marshall in the third place game tonight at 6. William Jewell will meet Simpson (Iowa) for the title at 8.

In the other championship semifinal, Simpson, with a 67-61 victory, handed Franklin & Marshall its first loss of the season. Anne Krumrine had a game-high 16 points for Franklin & Marshall (8-1). Simpson improved to 7-2.

In consolation semifinals, Occidental defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 74-58, and William Paterson (New Jersey) overwhelmed Rochester (New York), 76-53. The Crusaders’ Shannon Abrams had 23 rebounds to set a tournament record, breaking the 1987 record of 22 by Patty Campbell of St. Ambrose. Jenny Korinko led Occidental (3-6) with 21 points. PLNC evened its record to 4-4. Michelle Jones led William Paterson (8-2) past Rochester (2-9) with 23 points.

WRESTLING

Former Valhalla wrestler Rich Bailey, seeded third, won all his matches by either technical fall or major decision to advance to today’s 150-pound semifinals at the Midlands Wrestling Championships in Evanston, Ill. Bailey, wrestling for Cal State Bakersfield, defeated Richard Townsell of the Wildcat Wrestling Club, 16-0, in his quarterfinal.
