AIRPORT NOISE LAW: The Long Beach City Council on Tuesday will consider a noise-control ordinance for the Long Beach Airport that would eliminate local limits on the number of flights allowed while restricting the total amount of airplane noise. The ordinance, which has raised the ire of both pilots and homeowners living near the airport, was ordered by a federal judge presiding over a lawsuit brought against the city by commercial airlines challenging the noise limits.

A BIT OF LONDON: The first American outlet of Harrod’s, London’s world-famous department store that caters to royalty, will open Friday aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach. At 900 square feet, a fraction of the size of the London flagship store, the Long Beach outlet will carry 125 items ranging from clothing to food to souvenirs, all bearing the prestigious Harrod’s label. The grand opening at 10:30 a.m. will coincide with the British ocean liner’s “Voyage to 1939” promotion, a yearlong tribute to America’s “last innocent and carefree year.” The day’s events include a show of classic automobiles, live musical salutes and special tours of the ship’s refurbished hotel staterooms.
