The new year is expected to be christened with showers on its second day, a National Weather Service forecaster said.

A cold front moving south will bring a 60% chance of a quarter to half an inch of rain and gusty winds today. Coastal and inland winds may reach 25 m.p.h. tonight, and up to 30 m.p.h. in the mountain areas. Mountains in San Diego County should receive anywhere from 6 inches to 1 foot of snow today at the 5,000-feet level.

The showers and cloudiness will decrease tonight and early Wednesday morning, when the storm system heads east.
