A $3-million blaze early today destroyed the large roadside Bun Boy diner off Interstate 15 patronized by thousands of Southern California gamblers through the years, leaving five people slightly injured and many more hungry.

“The fire didn’t affect traffic on the interstate, but it may have had an effect on motorists’ stomachs,” said Fire Capt. Frank Kawasaki of the California Department of Forestry.

“That’s one of the few places to stop at on the way from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. The parking lot there is always full on the holiday weekends.”

The fire erupted in the diner’s kitchen on Baker Boulevard in this San Bernardino County community about 150 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. About 20 firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to a neighboring motel and gasoline station.
