California State Summer School for the Arts is conducting a statewide search, sponsored by Pacific Telesis Foundation, to select 400 high school students for its four-week summer institutes at Mills College in Oakland from July 14 through Aug. 11. Programs in visual arts, crafts, theater, music, dance, creative writing and film/video will be offered.

Tuition is $1,000, but scholarships based on economic need are available from several public and private sources. To apply for a scholarship--awarded to nearly half the teen-agers attending the 1989 session--students must fill out the tuition-assistance information in the application.

Brochures describing the programs and applications are available at high schools, libraries and arts councils through Feb. 2. Students selected for the programs will be notified April 23. For more information, call the CSSSA office in Sacramento at (916) 323-9614.
